Comeback win on road

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team rallied from an early 3-0 deficit Wednesday afternoon to pull out an 8-6 win at Pitt-Greensburg in non-conference action.

Grove City (10-8) trailed 3-0 after one inning but pulled to within 3-2 in the third inning when junior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) cracked a two-run double that scored sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and freshman second baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County).

Grove City then surged ahead with a five-run fourth inning, highlighted by Sampson's two-run single that scored Bevin and junior catcher Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview). Junior shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) capped the inning by singling home Minnich.

The Wolverines took the lead in the fourth when sophomore left fielder Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) and freshman DH David Chandler (Leesburg, Va./St. John's) scored on errors.

Bevin doubled in Chandler in the fifth, pushing the Wolverines' lead to 8-3. Pitt-Greensburg cut the lead to 8-6 in the eighth inning, then loaded the bases in the ninth inning. However, junior pitcher Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) retired the Bobcats and preserved the win.

Umland pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season. It is Umland's 10th career save.

Junior pitcher Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) earned the relief win. Zuchowski, the second of Grove City's six pitchers, threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed one hit.

Freshman James Hensell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) started and pitched 1 1/3 innings. Freshman Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) allowed one run in two innings while classmate Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) pitched a scoreless seventh. Senior Christian Hoffmann (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) also pitched in relief.

Bevin doubled twice and also walked twice in five plate appearances. Sampson went 2 for 5. Senior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled.

Grove City will visit Penn State Behrend for a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
