GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play Monday afternoon by splitting a conference doubleheader with visiting Westminster at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City rallied for a 2-1 win in Game One while Westminster took the second game, 4-1.
Senior pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) fired a one-hitter in the opener for Grove City. The left-hander struck out eight and did not allow an earned run in his nine innings.Â
Grove City (9-8, 1-1 PAC) trailed 1-0 entering the seventh inning but rallied to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore center fielder
Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and freshman third baseman
Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) opened the inning with singles. Junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) punched a game-tying single over first base, driving in Sampson. Bevin went to third on the play, then scored the go-ahead run moments later on a wild pitch.
All four of Grove City's Game One hits came in the seventh inning.
Minnich doubled and singled in Game Two while sophomore left fielder
Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) also went 2 for 4. Senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled in Minnich in the eighth, opening the Wolverines' scoring.Â
Bevin started on the mound and struck out 10 men in six innings. He yielded two earned runs, taking the setback. Junior
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) allowed an unearned run in two innings of relief. Junior pitcher
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his 2024 debut.
Grove City will visit Pitt-Greensburg at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a single non-conference game.
