CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped a 10-6 decision Tuesday afternoon at Case Western Reserve (10-5) in non-conference action at Nobby's Ballpark. Grove City (8-7) scored twice in the seventh and twice more in the eighth to cut the Spartans' lead to 8-6. However, Grove City could not complete its comeback.
Senior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) helped pace Grove City's offensive attack by going 2 for 5 with a double. Sophomore DH
Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) also went 2 for 5.Â
Junior shortstop
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) cracked a two-run triple in the eighth inning while junior right fielder
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and freshman left fielder
Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) both doubled.
Senior pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) struck out four men in 1 2/3 innings. He allowed a pair of runs and took the setback. Freshmen
Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna),
David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and
James Hensell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) all pitched in relief, as did junior
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada). Gallagher highlighted the relief efforts by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out two and did not allow a hit.
Grove City will host Westminster at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Jack Behringer Field. It will be both teams' conference opener.
