Grove City opens March with sweep

DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team received a pair of complete games Friday from its starting pitchers as the Wolverines swept a doubleheader with Rose-Hulman at the RussMatt Invitational, held at Northeast Regional Park.

Junior Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) held the Engineers to four hits over seven innings in a 2-1 Game One victory. Freshman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County) earned the win in the nightcap, striking out five in seven innings as the Wolverines secured an 8-2 victory. Neither starter walked a batter.

In the opener, Grove City broke a scoreless tie by scoring twice in the top of the sixth inning. Bevin singled in junior shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) to open the scoring. Sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) scored the eventual game-winner when he came home on a single from junior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley).

Bevin and Minnich both went 2 for 3 in the opener. Sampson doubled. Umland struck out seven and needed only 77 pitches to finish the game.

The Wolverines (6-3) stormed to a 6-0 lead in the second game by scoring three times in each of the first two innings. Minnich's sacrifice fly scored Vittone while freshman left fielder Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) scored on a groundout by senior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian). Bevin scored Grove City's third run of the inning on a single from sophomore third baseman Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry).

In the second inning, Vittone scored on a wild pitch while Holland came in on a Minnich double. Williams then singled in Minnich. Minnich and Williams both had sacrifice flies in the fourth inning, respectively scoring Holland and Bevin.

Holland finished 3 for 4 while Sampson and Vittone both went 2 for 3.

Grove City closes its Florida trip Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Buena Vista.
