Grove City continues Florida trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Grove City College baseball team is 4-3 overall after dropping a pair of games earlier this week at the RussMatt Invitational in Central Florida. Dubuque outlasted the Wolverines, 9-7, Monday afternoon while Alma slipped past Grove City on Thursday, 5-1.

Grove City pounded out 15 hits against Dubuque, led by a 4-for-5 outing from freshman second baseman Sam Bevin (Louisville, Ky./Wake County). Bevin tripled, doubled and cracked a pair of singles. Senior first baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) went 3 for 5 with a double while freshman left fielder Caison Holland (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) also doubled. Junior DH Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) singled twice.

Grove City trailed 6-0 after two innings but pulled to within 6-5 after scoring three runs in the third inning and two more two innings later. Junior shortstop Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) singled home sophomore third baseman Kenny Lavrich (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) to open the scoring. Vittone later scored on an error while sophomore center fielder Nick Sampson (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drove in freshman catcher Adam Weber (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour).

In the fifth inning, Sampson scored on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Williams singled in Bevin. Grove City added a pair of runs in the seventh as Minnich scored on an error and Cato drove in Williams with a single.

Senior pitcher Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) started for Grove City and yielded three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. He absorbed the defeat. Freshman David Gallagher (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) yielded two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out two. Junior Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) pitched the final 3 1/3 innings of relief. He struck out four while allowing one run.

Vittone doubled and singled Tuesday against Alma while Williams also doubled. Vittone scored Grove City's run on Bevin's infield single in the sixth inning.

Freshman pitcher Jack Houston (Vienna, Va./Vienna) started and allowed four runs in 5 1/3 innings. Rookie Micheal Earman (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) struck out three men in 2 2/3 innings. He allowed one unearned run.
