BEREA, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team opened its third season of varsity competition Tuesday evening with a 14-7 setback at Baldwin Wallace in non-conference action at George Finnie Stadium. Baldwin Wallace (2-0) outscored the Wolverines, 9-2, in the second half after Grove City led for much of the first two periods.
Freshman attack
Taylor Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) paced Grove City with three goals while senior midfielder
Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) scored twice. Junior midfielder
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and sophomore attack
Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) also scored.Â
Martin recorded two assists while Blythe and freshman midfielder
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) both chalked up assists.Â
Grove City trailed 3-2 early in the second quarter but back-to-back Blythe goals gave the Wolverines a 4-3 lead with 10:16 left in the first half. Martin scored five minutes later, pushing the lead to 5-3. Baldwin Wallace scored twice in the final 2:46 of the half to forge a 5-5 tie, however.Â
Roetering and Rowell both scored in the third quarter as the Wolverines held a 7-6 lead with six minutes left. Baldwin Wallace led 9-7 after 45 minutes, however.Â
Junior defender
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led the defense with four caused turnovers. She also had four draw controls and picked up three ground balls. Junior defender
Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) and freshman attack
Gwen Shilling (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) both caused two turnovers. Roetering added three ground balls.
Grove City finished the game with 18 turnovers. Baldwin Wallace had 16 turnovers. Baldwin Wallace outshot Grove City, 39-18.Â
Junior goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) stopped 10 shots for Grove City.
Grove City will face Warner (Fla.) next Monday in Clearwater, Fla.
