GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 74-71 decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson (6-1, 4-0) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Wednesday night at the Grove City College. Grove City (4-3, 3-1) had a chance to force overtime but a three-point shot off a baseline inbounds play missed as time expired.
Grove City trailed 48-38 at halftime and faced a 55-43 deficit in the third quarter before charging back. A layup from senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and a jumper by senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) in the final minute of the third quarter cut W&J's lead to 62-58 after 30 minutes.Â
Junior guard
Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) opened the final period with a three-pointer that cut the lead to 62-61. The Wolverines trailed by one on three occasions in the fourth quarter but W&J did not relinquish its lead.
Polczynski and senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) each fired in 14 points for Grove City. Davinsizer drilled a season-high four three-pointers.Â
Hasley and junior center
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) both added 10 points as four Wolverines finished in double figures.Â
W&J led 23-21 after one quarter. Polczynski's layup with five minutes left in the first half put Grove City up 32-31. However, W&J outscored Grove City, 17-6, over the back half of the second quarter.Â
Grove City shot 30 of 66 (46 percent) from the field for the game. W&J hit 29 of 72 (40 percent) attempts. W&J outrebounded the Wolverines, 44-36. Sherrerd led Grove City with six rebounds. Polczynski grabbed five rebounds.Â
Sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) dished out five assists while Hannon and senior guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) both had four assists. Polczynski added three assists. Davinsizer and Hertzler recorded three steals. Sherrerd blocked a pair of shots.Â
W&J finished with 19 turnovers while the Wolverines had 17 turnovers.Â
Meghan Dryburgh led W&J with 15 points while Halena Hill had 14 points.Â
Grove City will visit Chatham at 12 p.m. Saturday in conference action.
