GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's basketball team closed the 2024 calendar year Monday afternoon by securing a 65-38 victory over visiting Allegheny in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Grove City (8-3, 5-1) held Allegheny (3-8, 1-5) to 13 points in the first half as the Wolverines led 32-13 at the intermission. Overall, Grove City limited Allegheny to 25 percent (13 of 52) shooting from the field for the game. The Wolverines also out-rebounded Allegheny, 53-29.
Senior guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) fired in 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting to help pace Grove City. Sophomore center
Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) posted 10 points while junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) added nine points. Twelve Wolverines scored in Monday's win.
Grove City closed the first half on a 12-0 run over the final six minutes of the period. Junior guard
Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) sparked the the run with a layup while a Bock three-pointer and a jumper by sophomore guard
Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) pushed the lead to 27-13.
Sophomore center
Austin Johncour (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) scored in the paint with one minute left and Christenson's three-pointer closed the first half.
Allegheny cut the lead to 34-23 in the first five minutes of the second half. Grove City regained control, however, with a 10-0 spurt. Collins and Bock both hit three-pointers during the run while Christenson and senior forward
Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) added jumpers.
Grove City finished the game 27 of 68 (40 percent) from the field. The Wolverines had 11 turnovers, including only two in the second half. Allegheny turned over the ball six times in each half.
Freshman guard
Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) led the Wolverines with a career-high nine rebounds. Christenson snagged eight rebounds.
Skelton also led Grove City with four assists and a pair of blocks. Christenson added two blocked shots. Freshman guard
Mike Vaughn (Oakdale, Pa./Bishop Canevin) collected three steals.
Ryan Lang led Allegheny with 14 points.
Monday's game marked the 151st all-time meeting between the programs. The teams first met in 1898, Grove City's first season of basketball. Grove City opened that inaugural season by playing Allegheny. Grove City has 75 all-time wins against the Gators. The teams will meet February 5 in Meadville.
Grove City returns to action Saturday at Thiel. The game will tip off at 3 p.m. in Greenville.
