Sunshine State split

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed 2024 with a 92-50 setback Friday against national power Wisconsin-Stout in neutral site action hosted by Eckerd College. Wisconsin-Stout, which advanced to the final 16 of the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, broke open Friday's game with a 31-12 run in the second quarter. 

Sophomore guard Alexa McDole (Evans City, Pa./Mars) paced Grove City (5-5) with nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from behind the three-point line. Senior forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) tossed in eight points and senior guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) added seven points. 

Grove City shot 37 percent (19 of 52) from the field. Wisconsin-Stout went 38 for 69 (55 percent) on field goal attempts. Wisconsin-Stout (8-2) also converted Grove City's 29 turnovers into 39 points.

Polczynski led the Wolverines with six rebounds. The Blue Devils held a 34-33 edge on the glass. 

Hannon and Polczynski both recorded three assists. 

Wisconsin-Stout led 14-10 after one quarter, then extended its lead to 46-22 by halftime. Amanda Giesen led the Blue Devils with 16 points. 

Grove City opened its Florida trip Thursday afternoon with a 61-50 win over North Park. Friday's game marked the first meeting between the programs.

The Wolverines return to action Saturday, January 4 at 1 p.m. when they visit Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Thiel.
