Yarberough scores 1,000th as Grove City rolls

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior guard Chase Yarberough surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career while three teammates joined him as double-figure scorers Wednesday afternoon as the Grove City College men's basketball team earned an 83-61 win over visiting Alma in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Yarberough fired in 21 points, which gives him 1,011 points for his career. He is the 32nd player in program history to reach that milestone. Yarberough went over the 1,000-point mark when he hit a three-pointer with three minutes remaining in the first half.

Junior forward Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) poured in 17 points while junior guard Kyle Randle (Willowick, Ohio/Eastlake North) and sophomore center Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) both scored 10 points.

Grove City (7-3) trailed for much of the first half before surging ahead with a 14-1 run during the final seven minutes. Christenson forged a 23-23 tie with a layup while Yarberough's jumper gave Grove City the lead. Senior forwards John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) and Russ Gump (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) added field goals on each side of Yarberough's milestone three-point goal.

Christenson drained a three-pointer with 2:05 left in the half to give Grove City a 35-24 lead. The Wolverines led 37-30 at the intermission.

The Wolverines sealed the win with a 12-0 run over the final five minutes. Randle scored on three straight possessions, giving Grove City a 77-61 lead. Freshman guard Anderson Skelton (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) slammed home an offensive rebound while Ward's jumper pushed the lead to 20. Cherry's two free throws closed the outburst.

Grove City shot 54 percent (35 of 65) from the field for the game, including 6-of-12 accuracy on three-point goals. The Wolverines went 19 of 30 (63 percent) in the second half. Alma converted 23 of 58 (40 percent) field goal attempts. The Scots hit 13 of 28 (46 percent) shots from behind the three-point line.
