NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team captured its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference title by pulling out a 4-3 victory Saturday evening at top-seeded Westminster in the championship round of the season-ending conference tournament.
The victory sends Grove City (13-3-3) to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament for the seventh time in program history.
Grove City broke a 2-2 tie by scoring twice in a 10-minute of the second half. Sophomore forward
Tori Stevenson (Butler, Pa./Butler) broke the tie by scoring at 63:42. Senior midfielder
Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) assisted Stevenson's go-ahead goal.
The lead grew to 4-2 at 73:59 when senior midfielder
Erin Venus (Medina, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) scored her first collegiate game-winning goal. Senior forward
Natalie Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) assisted the Venus goal.
Westminster cut the lead to 4-3 with 11:13 left on Natalie Vilchek's second goal of the match.
Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the first 14 minutes. Sophomore defender
Emma Dailey (East Brady, Pa./Karns City) headed in a corner kick at 11:24 to give Grove City the early lead. Senior midfielder
Lexi Zook (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) assisted Dailey's goal, her fourth score of the season.
Herrmann doubled the lead with an unassisted goal at 13:48.
Vilchek and Lydia Ohm both scored for Westminster (11-6-1), tying the match by halftime.Â
Grove City outshot Westminster, 21-12, including a 12-8 edge in shots on goal. The Wolverines owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.Â
Senior goalkeeper
Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) made five saves to record her 46th career victory.Â
Herrmann now has 21 goals this season, which is the second-highest single-season total in program history. Meg Tilley scored a school-record 25 goals in 2002.Â
It is Grove City's ninth all-time Presidents' Athletic Conference title. This is the first tournament title that Grove City has won on the road.
Grove City went 8-0-2 in conference play during the regular season while Westminster finished 9-0-1. The teams played to a 2-2 draw October 11 at Grove City.Â
The NCAA Tournament pairings will be announced Monday afternoon.
