Grove City concludes season at NCAA Tourney

DALLAS, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team closed the 2024 season Saturday afternoon by dropping a 3-1 decision at Misericordia (18-1-2) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at Mangelsdorf Field.

Following a scoreless first half, the teams combined for four goals in an 11-minute span. Misericordia snagged a 1-0 lead at 48:47 on a goal from Alyssa Steenback. Grove City tied the match at 53:24, however, as senior forward Britta Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) scored her fourth goal of the season. Senior forward Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) assisted Lagerquist's tying goal.

The Cougars broke the tie five minutes later, though, on a Caitlin Sommerville goal at 58:45. Emma Sweitzer then scored 26 seconds later to double the lead.

Misericordia owned an 8-5 edge in shots on goal and a 23-7 advantage in total shots. Misericordia recorded 13 corner kicks and Grove City had three corners.

Senior goalie Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) made five saves for Grove City (13-4-3).

Misericordia will play Ithaca at 1 p.m. Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Ithaca nipped Penn State Behrend, 1-0, in Saturday's second match at Mangelsdorf Field.

Saturday's match marked Grove City's seventh all-time appearance in the national tournament. The all-time Grove City-Misericordia series is now tied 1-1.

Herrmann concluded the season with 21 goals and 49 points. Both marks are second-most in single-season program history. Her 41 career goals are fourth in program history. Lagerquist finished her career with 24 assists, the No. 5 mark in program history.

Grove City will graduate Hermann, Lagerquist, Lisman, forward Natalie Merrick (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian), midfielder Erin Venus (Medina, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), defender Ella Wrabley (Carnegie, Pa./Our Lady of Sacred Heart) and midfielder Lexi Zook (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove). That senior group helped Grove City to 48 wins, two Presidents' Athletic Conference titles and two NCAA Tournament berths.
