UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the opening weekend of play Saturday afternoon with a 60-58 overtime loss to Alma at John Carroll University's Winking Lizard Tip-Off Tournament in the Tony DeCarlo Center.
Alma's Brooke LeRoux drained a three-pointer with four seconds left to give the Scots the lead. That marked the fifth lead change of overtime.
All-Tournament Team honoree
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) led Grove City with 17 points. The junior forward finished 6 of 10 from the field and also drained all five of her free throw attempts.
Senior guard
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) added nine points for the Wolverines, who shot 22 of 61 (36 percent) from the field.
Hannon also snagged a team-leading six rebounds while Sherrerd collected five boards. Alma owned a 56-32 edge on the glass. Alma shot 31 percent (22 of 72) from the floor.
Freshman forward
Alexis Hudson (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run) recorded three steals. Grove City forced 29 Alma turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the ball 24 times.
Grove City led 7-6 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 21-18 by halftime. The Wolverines led 40-36 after 30 minutes. Alma took a 53-51 lead in the closing moments of regulation but senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) drilled a game-tying jumper.
LeRoux led Alma with 22 points.
Grove City will visit Pitt-Greensburg next Saturday at 3 p.m. in non-conference action.
