Reese Hasley (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) fired in a career-high 21 points while senior forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) matched a career best with 19 points Wednesday night as the Grove City College women's basketball team pulled out a 71-60 victory over visiting Waynesburg University (4-1, 0-1) in the Presidents' Athletic Conference lidlifter at the Grove City College Arena.
Hasley hit 8 of 10 shots from the field, including both of her three-point attempts. Hannon hit three consecutive three-pointers in the final two minutes of the first half to give Grove City a 32-28 lead.
Still, Grove City (2-2, 1-0) needed an 11-0 run down the stretch to secure the win. Grove City led 58-57 with 3:34 left but junior forward
Meredith Sherrerd (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) sparked the closing rally with a pair of jumpers. Hasley scored on a fast break while senior guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) and sophomore guard
Bethany Thompson (Exeter Township, Pa./High Point Baptist) both hit two free throws.
Hasley sewed up the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds.
Sherrerd finished with her first collegiate double-double as she posted 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She helped Grove City attain a 47-45 edge on the glass. Polczynski collected six rebounds and Hasley had five rebounds.
Grove City shot 26 of 71 (37 percent) for the game. The Wolverines converted 7 of 14 shots in the fourth quarter. Waynesburg went 5 of 18 (28 percent) on field goal attempts in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Yellow Jackets shot 35 percent (23 of 65) from the floor.
Waynesburg turned over the ball 22 times while Grove City committed 15 turnovers.
Thompson recorded five assists and Hasley had four assists for the Wolverines. Senior guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) assisted three field goals. She also had two steals.
The game featured seven ties, including a 17-17 deadlock after one quarter. Grove City led 49-46 after 30 minutes.
Kara McFadden led Waynesburg with 21 points.
Grove City will host conference foe Franciscan at 1 p.m. Saturday.
