GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Four Grove City College men's basketball players scored in double figures Wednesday night to help lift the Wolverines to a 64-56 home win over Waynesburg University in both teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at the Grove City College Arena.
Senior guards
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) both fired in 14 points for Grove City (3-2, 1-0) while sophomore guard
Drew Collins (Washington, Pa./Trinity) added a career-high 12 points as he went 4-for-4 on three-point attempts.
Junior forward
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) added 11 points, along with a team-leading six rebounds.
Grove City surged ahead midway through the second half with a 20-6 run that featured six three-point goals. Bock cut Waynesburg's lead to 42-39 with a three-pointer while Christenson's layup pulled the Wolverines to within 42-41. Bock tied the game at 44 with another three-pointer. Yarberough hit a pair of threes while Bock and Collins had successive three-pointers that put Grove City up 56-47.
Grove City trailed 28-23 at halftime but shot 52 percent (12 of 23) from the field in the second half. The Wolverines hit 7 of 14 three-point attempts over the final 20 minutes. Overall, Grove City shot 21 of 54 (39 percent) for the game. The Wolverines limited Waynesburg to a 17-of-53 (32 percent) shooting performance.
Waynesburg outrebounded the Wolverines, 42-33. Sophomore guard
Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) collected five rebounds for Grove City in his first collegiate start.
Grove City committed 14 turnovers while Waynesburg had 19 turnovers. Yarberough recorded three assists.
P.J. Suggs led Waynesburg with 13 points.
Grove City will host Franciscan at 3 p.m. Saturday in conference play.
