GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team will visit No. 19 Johns Hopkins (9-1) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The teams will meet Saturday, November 30 at 12 p.m. in Baltimore, Md., at Homewood Field.
Grove City (9-1) earned one of 12 at-large berths in the NCAA playoffs after capturing a share of the Presidents' Athletic Conference title. Johns Hopkins secured the Centennial Conference's automatic bid by finishing 6-0 in conference play this year.
This will be Grove City's second straight appearance in the national playoffs. The Wolverines defeated undefeated Susquehanna in the first round last year, 21-20, before falling to eventual national champion Cortland State in the second round, 25-24.
Johns Hopkins advanced to the national quarterfinals last year. The Blue Jays earned wins over Western Connecticut State (62-20) and Union (39-17) before dropping a 39-36 verdict to Randolph-Macon.
Johns Hopkins will be making its 12th all-time NCAA playoff appearance. Eleven of those appearances have come since 2011. The Blue Jays are 43-5 over the last four seasons while Grove City owns a 36-8 record in that span.
Grove City and Johns Hopkins are part of a five-team grouping in the 40-team tournament. Sixteen of the 40 teams will play first round games this Saturday, November 23. The lone first round game in that five-team group will pit Maryville (Tenn.) at Berry (Ga.). Tony Kunczewski, a 2000 Grove City College graduate, is Berry head coach. The Maryville-Berry winner will play at DePauw in the second round. That winner will face Grove City or Johns Hopkins in the third round December 7.
This will be the first meeting between the programs. Johns Hopkins is Grove City's second all-time opponent from Maryland. The Wolverines won six of nine games against Frostburg State between 1962 and 1991.
