LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Led by runner-up
Lydia Bennett (Bethel, Maine/Gould Academy) and two addition All-Region performers, the Grove City College women's cross country team earned fourth place Saturday at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Championships, held at Lock Haven University. The fourth-place regional finish matches the best finish in program history, joining the 2005 and 2009 squads.Ā
Bennett earned second place overall as she completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21 minutes, 11 seconds. That is the best finish for a Grove City runner since Kristen Carter placed second at the Mideast Championships in 2008.Ā
Seniors
Grace Smith (Dover, Ohio/Dover) and
Ella Lyle (Hurricane, W.Va./Ignite) joined Bennett as All-Region runners. Smith finished 26th overall with a time of 22:09.6 while Lyle earned 30th by posting a time of 22:12.4.Ā
Sophomore
Cayla Lawrence (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) captured 42nd place with a time of 22:38.6 while senior
Julia Bauer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) crossed in 55th place (23:00.2).
Freshman
Carli Freeman (Lowville, N.Y./Lowville) earned 62nd place with a time of 23:10.0 while senior
Virginia Williams (Copley, Ohio/Copley) rounded out the lineup with a time of 23:31.2, good for 71st place.Ā
Washington & Jefferson junior Claire Anderson won the individual race with a time of 21:14.9.Ā All-Region honors are awarded to the top 35 finishers.Ā
Johns Hopkins won the team title with 34 points while Carnegie Mellon finished second with 76 points. Gettysburg placed third with 150 points.
The NCAA Division III Championships individual and team selections will be announced Sunday. The Championships are next Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.
