GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior swingman
Mike Christenson (Oakton, Va./Trinity) hit a tiebreaking jumper with 29 seconds left Saturday afternoon to help the Grove City College men's basketball team pull out a come-from-behind 74-70 victory over visiting Fredonia State in non-conference action at the Grove City College Arena.
Christenson's field goal broke a 70-70 tie. He then sealed the win by hitting two free throws with 1.3 seconds left. One of three men to score in double figures for Grove City (2-2), Christenson finished with 13 points.
Senior guard
Chase Yarberough (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) fired in a game-high 23 points while senior guard
Jonah Bock (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Eleven men scored for the Wolverines.Â
Grove City trailed 37-23 in the first half but closed the period on a 7-0 run over the final 2:19. Senior forward
John Ward (Indian Land, S.C./Covenant Day, N.C.) started the comeback with a jumper. Yarberough drained a three-pointer and a pair of free throws that cut the Blue Devils' lead to 37-30 by halftime.Â
Grove City forged a 40-40 tie early in the second half when sophomore guard
Caleb Haller (Delaware, Ohio/Marion Hawks) hit a three-pointer off a Bock assist. The Wolverines took their first lead of the second half with 12 minutes to go as back-to-back Yarberough three-pointers put Grove City up 54-49.Â
The Wolverines shot 48 percent (16 of 33) from the field in the second half. Overall, Grove City finished 27 of 69 (39 percent). Fredonia State (0-2) converted 24 of 50 (48 percent) field goal attempts.Â
Grove City forced 17 turnovers while committing a season-low seven turnovers. Yarberough recorded five steals while sophomore forward
Isaac Cherry (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) had three steals. Bock and Yarberough both had five assists. Cherry and Ward each assisted three field goals.
Yarberough secured a game-high eight rebounds, helping Grove City attain a 37-35 edge on the glass.Â
The game featured eight lead changes and five ties.
The Wolverines open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when Waynesburg University visits the Grove City College Arena.Â
