Grove City rolls past Barons

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's soccer team scored three first half goals Saturday afternoon on the way to a 3-1 home victory over defending Presidents' Athletic Conference champion Franciscan (6-4, 1-1 PAC) in conference action at Don Lyle Field.

Sophomore midfielder Aiden Eck (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), sophomore defender Camden Thomas (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) and freshman midfielder Noah Gray (Glen Mills, Pa./The Christian Academy) all scored in the first 39 minutes for the Wolverines (2-2-4, 2-0 PAC).

Eck gave Grove City a 1-0 lead at 13:36 when he blasted a penalty kick into the goal. The penalty kick came after a handball violation in the box.

Thomas doubled the lead eight minutes later when he headed in his third goal of the week. Senior defender Matt Kimmich (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and senior forward Hunter Hardin (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Freeport) both recorded assists on the goal. Kimmich sent a corner kick to Hardin, who then headed the ball to Thomas at 21:33. Thomas also notched his second game-winning goal in as many matches.

Gray registered his first collegiate goal at 38:27 when he scored an unassisted goal.

Franciscan's Lucas Cross scored 6:28 into the second half but the Wolverines blanked the Barons for the final 38-plus minutes.

Grove City outshot Franciscan, 15-6. Grove City had five total shots on goal while the Barons had two. The Wolverines owned an 11-4 edge in corner kicks for the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra) made one save in earning his second win of the week.

Grove City will visit conference rival Westminster at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
