Campbell, Thomas both score twice in road win

PITTSBURGH -- Entering Wednesday's match at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham, Grove City College men's soccer players Ari Campbell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) and Camden Thomas (North Lima, Ohio/South Range) had each scored one career goal while at Grove City. 

Both men made major changes to their respective career stat line Wednesday.

Campbell, a senior midfielder, and Thomas, a sophomore defender, both scored twice to help lift Grove City to a 4-2 win over Chatham in both teams' conference opener at Graham Field. 

Grove City (1-2-4, 1-0 PAC) fell behind at 26:37 as Chatham's Azavier Coppin scored an unassisted goal. However, Thomas tied the match 15 seconds later with his first goal of 2023. Campbell gave the Wolverines a 2-1 lead at 35:13 when he scored his first goal of the season. Sophomore forward Jed Hart (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) assisted Campbell's go-ahead goal. 

Grove City led 2-1 at halftime, then doubled its lead 9:32 into the second half when Thomas scored his second goal of the match. Coppin cut the Wolverines' lead to 3-2 by scoring at 70:55 but Campbell sealed the victory with an unassisted goal at 77:43.

The Wolverines peppered Chatham goalkeeper Maxwell Cottrill with 19 shots on goal. Overall, Grove City held a 27-7 advantage in total shots and a 19-5 edge in shots on goal. Grove City had eight corner kicks while Chatham had three corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teddy Almeter (Monroeville, Pa./Serra) earned his first collegiate victory by stopping three shots. 

The Wolverines will open the home portion of the conference schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. when Grove City hosts Franciscan at Don Lyle Field.
