Grove City nipped on opening night

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season Wednesday evening with an 11-9 setback against visiting Fredonia State in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.

Senior midfielder Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) and freshman attack Jackie Rowell (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) both fired in three goals for Grove City. Sophomore attack Meah Groves (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), sophomore midfielder Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and sophomore defender Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) all added goals. 

Sophomore defender Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana), senior midfielder Meredith Basham (Olathe, Kansas/Olathe East) and sophomore attack Sarah Pindel (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) all recorded assists. 

Rowell scored with 34 seconds left in the first half to forge a 5-5 tie. Fredonia State took a 6-5 lead 63 seconds into the second half on Audrey Brown's goal but the Wolverines reclaimed the lead when Rowell and Groves scored consecutively. 

Fredonia State tied the game, 7-7, with 7:53 left in the third quarter, then took the lead for good by scoring three times in the first 2:14 of the fourth period. Nazigian scored twice in a two-minute span to cut the lead to 10-9 with 10:16 left.

Grove City outshot Fredonia State, 24-16. Grove City had 27 turnovers while Fredonia State turned over the ball 30 times. Roetering caused four turnovers for Grove City while sophomore defender Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) caused three turnovers. 

Jackson led Grove City with five ground balls. Roetering collected four ground balls while Arnold, Rowell and sophomore goalie Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) all had three ground balls. Kiggins made five saves.

The Wolverines will host Baldwin Wallace at 1 p.m. Saturday in a non-conference game at Don Lyle Field.
