WILMORE, Ky. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Asbury (Ky.). Grove City dropped the opener, 6-4. In Game Two, Grove City rallied from a 10-1 hole to take an 11-10 lead in the top of the eighth inning.
However, Asbury scored three times in the home half of the eighth inning to earn a 13-11 victory.
In the opener, Grove City trailed 4-2 in the seventh inning but scored twice to tie the game. Senior catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) singled in junior second baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian), cutting the lead to 4-3. Sophomore third baseman
Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) then walked with the bases loaded, forcing in senior pinch hitter
Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong).
Asbury scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to reclaim the lead, however.
Williams doubled as part of a 2-for-4 effort. Sophomore center
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) also doubled for Grove City.
Senior pitcher
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) allowed three earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Sophomore
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) took the setback after allowing two unearned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Both pitchers struck out two men.
Vittone led off the nightcap with a home run but Asbury countered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Asbury extended the lead to 10-1 before Grove City stormed back.
Sophomore DH
Josh Minnich (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) laced a two-run double in the top of the sixth that scored Kilbane and sophomore left fielder
Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View).
One inning later, Minnich's two-run single drove in Saylor and Vittone, cutting the lead to 10-5. Kilbane and Minnich both scored on errors, further fueling a six-run outburst.
Freshman right fielder
Trey Wagner (Mars, Pa./Mars) continued the rally by roping a two-run single to score sophomores
Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) and
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview).
Kilbane scored the tying run in the eighth on a Minnich groundout. Rodriguez scored on an error, giving Grove City a short-lived 11-10 lead.
Kilbane finished 4 for 6 in Game Two while Minnich went 3 for 5. Vittone also went 3 for 5 and Rodriguez added two singles.
First-year sophomore
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) made his collegiate pitching debut in Game Two for Grove City. Leslie struck out seven in four innings. He allowed six hits and five earned runs.
Junior
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) yielded three earned runs in two innings of relief. Sophomore
Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) pitched the final two innings, allowing two earned runs. Zuchowski absorbed the defeat.
Grove City will visit Mideast Region power Wooster next Saturday for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
