WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at No. 22 Wooster. Grove City earned a 5-1 victory in the opener while Wooster took the second game, 19-7.
In Game One, senior pitcher
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) struck out 12 men and allowed only one run and two hits in seven innings.
Yet, the Wolverines trailed 1-0 entering the top of the eighth inning before rallying for the victory. Junior first baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) laced a leadoff double and sophomore right fielder
Bryce Tagliatella (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug Regional) followed with a walk.
Both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from senior pinch hitter
Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong). Sophomore second baseman
Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) gave Grove City the lead by cracking a two-run single to left.
Grove City then added three runs in the top of the ninth. Sophomore center fielder
Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) led off with a single and later scored on a Williams single. Sophomore pinch hitter
Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) drove in senior catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) with a sacrifice fly while Vittone later singled in junior shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford).
Williams finished 2 for 4 while Vittone went 2 for 5. Sophomore third baseman
Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) doubled.
Sophomore pitcher
Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings to earn his seventh career save. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Saylor went 4 for 4 with a triple and double in the nightcap. Rodriguez, Tagliatella and freshman left fielder
Andrew Seest (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) all doubled.
Saylor's two-run triple opened the scoring in the top of the first. He later scored on Baccari's ground out. Wooster countered by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, however.
Baccari drove in three runs while Kilbane scored three times.
Sophomore pitcher
David Leslie (Butler, Pa./Butler) started and took the Game Two setback. He allowed five earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Junior
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) struck out seven men in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Senior
Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) and sophomore
Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) both pitched one inning of relief.
Grove City will begin its Spring Break trip Friday, March 3 with a doubleheader against Saint Mary's (Minn.) in Davenport, Fla. The Wolverines will play eight games in the Sunshine State.
