WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 victory Wednesday night over host Waynesburg in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at John F. Wiley Stadium.
Grove City (10-4-1, 7-0-1 PAC) fell behind in the opening minute of the match but surged ahead in the second half as junior forward
Emma Herrmann (Hilton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) scored twice in a 16-minute span.
Herrmann tied the match at 52:29 when she scored on a penalty kick. It is her first penalty kick goal of the season.
Grove City then took the lead at 68:15 as Herrmann scored an unassisted goal. Herrmann leads the Wolverines with 14 total goals and four game-winning goals this season.
Waynesburg (6-6-2, 4-3-2) scored 56 seconds into the match as Madey Hill scored off an assist from Kate James. However, junior goalkeeper
Courtney Lisman (Mars, Pa./Mars) blanked the Yellow Jackets over the final 89 minutes by making five saves.
Grove City held an 18-15 edge in total shots, including an 8-4 advantage in the second half. The Wolverines had eight shots on goal while Waynesburg recorded six shots on goal. Grove City owned a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Coupled with Westminster's 1-0 loss Wednesday night at Washington & Jefferson, Grove City (22 points) now owns a four-point lead in the standings over Westminster (6-2, 18 points). The Wolverines will clinch the top seed in the season-ending six-team conference tournament with one win in its final two matches. Two ties will also give Grove City the No. 1 seed.
Wednesday's match marked Grove City's road finale for the regular season. The Wolverines will host Saint Vincent (5-1-2 PAC) at 12 p.m. Saturday. Next Wednesday, Grove City hosts W&J (4-1-3 PAC) at 5 p.m. in the regular season finale.
