Nine is fine for Wolverines

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) scored with six seconds remaining in overtime Tuesday night to help lift the Grove City College women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 victory over visiting Franciscan (5-3, 2-1 PAC) at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City (9-1, 3-0 PAC) extended its win streak to nine games and remains tied for first in the conference with Chatham. 

Tuesday night's game featured seven lead changes and 10 ties. Franciscan nearly won the game at the end of regulation but Joanna Hilkert's shot crossed the goal line after time expired, sending the game into the three-minute sudden death period. The extra period featured only one shot, Nazigian's game-winning goal.

Six Grove City players joined Nazigian in the scoring column. Senior attack Brooke Stoltzfus (Elverson, Pa./Conestoga Christian) fired in a five goals and added two assists as part of a seven-point night. Nazigian, sophomore midfielder Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), freshman attack Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and freshman Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) all scored twice.

Senior attack Grace Dymski (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and sophomore attack Madeline Dunda (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) added goals for Grove City.

Martin and Stoltzfus scored in a 20-second span late in the first quarter to give Grove City a 4-3 lead after 15 minutes of action. Franciscan rallied to take an 8-6 lead but goals from Roetering and Nazigian in the final 2:12 forged an 8-8 tie by halftime. Each team then scored five times in the third quarter.

Roetering also led Grove City with three caused turnovers. Nazigian recorded 11 draw controls and freshman defender Emily Arnold (Ijiamsville, Md./Urbana) had four draw controls. 

Arnold led the Wolverines with eight ground balls. Stoltzfus picked up six ground balls while Dunda and Roetering each recorded four ground balls. 

Freshman Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) made 11 saves to earn her ninth win of the season. Each team had 31 shots in the game. Franciscan held a 25-22 edge in shots on goal.

Grove City turned over possession 22 times and Franciscan had 24 turnovers. 

Grove City will visit Waynesburg in conference action Thursday at 6 p.m.
