11th straight win gives Grove City top seed

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's lacrosse team clinched the top seed in next week's Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by rolling to a 22-5 win Saturday afternoon at conference rival Westminster. Grove City earned its 11th straight overall win and finished the round-robin schedule with a 7-0 league mark.

Grove City (13-4 overall) charged out to an 11-0 lead in the first half and led 12-1 at intermission. The Wolverines then pushed the lead to 17-3 after 45 minutes. 

Thirteen men scored for the Wolverines, led by a four-goal outing from freshman attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima). Senior midfielder Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) scored three times while senior midfielder Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina), junior attack James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus), sophomore attack Trenton Steele (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and freshman attack Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) all scored twice.

Senior attack Blaise Bishop (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), senior faceoff specialist Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), senior attack Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and senior midfielder Keith Torrillo (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) also scored for the Wolverines, as did sophomore midfielder Elijah Gebhart (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran), freshman long stick midfielder Tyler Curry (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and freshman midfielder Alec Jones (Chesterfield, N.J./Notre Dame).

Petrolle scored twice in the first six minutes to spark Grove City's eight-goal outburst in the first perio. Blythe added two goals and an assist in the quarter while Speers and junior midfielder David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) also assisted goals in the period.

Blythe, Evans and Kraus all finished with two assists. Gladstone, Petrolle and Speers each had one assist, as did senior defender Josh Snell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), sophomore midfielder Griffen Agawa (San Ramon, Calif./California) and freshman midfielder Trey Zabroski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).

Evans won 16 of 24 faceoffs and finished with a game-high 12 ground balls. Torrillo won 4 of 5 faceoffs and had four ground balls. Junior defender Brock Simmons (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) recorded five ground balls. Simmons also caused a pair of turnovers.

Sophomore goalie Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) stopped 11 shots to earn the win. 

Grove City outshot Westminster (10-4, 5-2 PAC) 62-32, including a 42-16 edge in shots on goal. Grove City had 14 turnovers while Westminster committed 23 turnovers. The Wolverines also had a 44-32 edge in total ground balls. 

The Wolverines will have home-field advantage in next week's conference tournament. Grove City will host No. 4 Chatham (6-10, 4-3 PAC) in Wednesday's semifinals. The start time will be announced over the weekend by the conference office.
