12th straight win sends Grove City to finals

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Seventeen Grove City College men's lacrosse players scored goals Wednesday night to help lift the Wolverines to a 27-4 victory over visiting Chatham in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament semifinal at Robert E. Thorn Field. Top-seeded Grove City will now host Saint Vincent in Saturday night's title game at 7:30 p.m.

Grove City (14-4) led 5-1 after one quarter, then outscored No. 4 seed Chatham, 9-0, in the second period.

Senior attack Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) fired in a game-high five goals for Grove City while junior attack James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus) posted three goals and four assists as part of a game-high seven points. Freshman attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) also scored three times. Senior midfielder Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and freshman attack Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) both scored twice.

The Wolverines also received tallies from senior attack Blaise Bishop (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), senior faceoff specialist Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), senior defender Josh Snell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), senior attack Josh Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell), senior midfielder Keith Torrillo (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe), junior midfielder David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), sophomore midfielder Jack Atwood (Hudson, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian), sophomore midfielder Jack Carpenter (Newtown, Conn./St. Joseph), sophomore Elijah Gebhart (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran), sophomore attack Trenton Steele (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch), freshman midfielder Jason Muench (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and freshman midfielder Trey Zabroski (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).

Hougan, Zabroski and senior Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) all had three assists. Bishop and Blythe each assisted two goals. Evans, Gladstone and sophomore midfielder Griffen Agawa (San Ramon, Calif./California) recorded one assist each.

Grove City won 30 of 31 faceoffs. Evans went 19 for 19 while Torrillo won all seven of his chances and Atwood went 4 for 4. Evans led Grove City with 18 ground balls. Torrillo had six ground balls while Atwood and Zabroski both had four ground balls. 

Sophomore goalie Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) earned the win by making four saves in the first half. Senior R.J. Miller (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) made three saves in the second half. 

Grove City outshot the Cougars, 62-18, including a 43-11 in shots on goal. Grove City had 18 turnovers and Chatham had 17 turnovers. 

Saint Vincent (13-1) won Wednesday's other semifinal by picking up a 10-7 win over Westminster. Grove City pulled out a 12-7 home win April 2 over visiting Saint Vincent. The Wolverines are in pursuit of their third straight conference title.
