Grove City wins 9th straight

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Sixteen Grove City College men's lacrosse players scored goals Saturday to lift the Wolverines to a 27-2 Senior Day win over Franciscan in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City (11-4, 5-0 PAC) earned its ninth straight overall victory and clinched a berth in the conference tournament.

Senior attack Josh Spicher (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led Grove City's offensive outburst by firing in four goals. Senior midfielder Brett Gladstone (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) pumped in three goals while six men scored twice: senior attack Blaise Bishop (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), freshman attack Matt Blythe (Mendon, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima), sophomore midfielder Jack Carpenter (Newtown, Conn./St. Joseph), freshman midfielder Alec Jones (Chesterfield, N.J./Notre Dame), junior midfielder David Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and freshman midfielder Jason Muench (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park).

Senior midfielder Grant Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair), senior goalie R.J. Miller (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), senior midfielder Keith Torrillo (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe), senior defender Josh Snell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), junior Jack Petit (Pensacola, Fla./West Florida School of Advanced Technology), junior midfielder Max Chmura (Wadsworth, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), sophomore Trenton Steele (Littleton, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and freshman midfielder Tim Plyler (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) added goals for Grove City.

Senior attack Michael La Forte (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) and freshman attack Zachary Hougan (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) both recorded a team-high three assists. Senior midfielders Addison Bennett (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and Jed Speers (Medina, Ohio/Medina) each had two assists. 

Bishop, Miller, Muench, Plyler, Steele, junior attack James Petrolle (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and junior defender Brock Simmons (Akron, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) also assisted goals. 

Senior defenders Cody Adams (Pullman, Wash./Pullman) and Sam Luithle (Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) led a defensive effort that limited Franciscan (4-6, 1-4 PAC) to 14 shots. Grove City held a 54-14 edge in shots. 

Grove City led 9-0 after one quarter, then extended the lead to 20-0 by halftime.

Evans and Snell led the Wolverines with seven ground balls each. Junior Kyle Coogan (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis Christian) caused three turnovers while Adams, Bennett and Simmons each caused two turnovers. Overall, Franciscan turned over possession 27 times. Grove City had 18 turnovers.

Evans won 10 of 13 faceoffs. Torrillo won 8 of 9 faceoffs. 

Miller made six saves in the first half to earn the win. Junior Danny Stone (Chantilly, Va./Flint Hill) made two saves in the third quarter. Gladstone stopped one shot in the fourth period.

Grove City will host Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m. Tuesday in conference action at Thorn Field.
