Grove City sweeps Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. -- The Grove City College baseball team completed a three-game season sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany by taking both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bethany Park. The Wolverines picked up a 4-1 victory in the opener, then secured a 7-2 win in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City (21-10, 12-6 PAC) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth when senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) belted a leadoff home run.

Senior right fielder Colton Lineman (Apex, N.C./Northwood) followed with a single and later scored when junior catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) lofted a sacrifice fly.

The Wolverines added a run in the sixth when sophomore DH Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) squeezed home freshman third baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls).

Kilbane, sophomore shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and freshman second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) all doubled in the opener. Baccari and Clary both finished 2 for 3 and Vittone went 2 for 4. Vittone scored Grove City's first run when he came home on Saylor's third-inning single.

Freshman pitcher Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada) earned his sixth win of the season by throwing a complete game. Umland (6-2) struck out five and allowed no earned runs in seven innings. He walked two and allowed five singles.

Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) paced Grove City in Game Two by going 4 for 5 with a home run, double and three runs batted in. His two-run blast in the top of the sixth broke a scoreless tie.

Bethany halved the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning but Grove City reclaimed a two-run lead in the seventh when Saylor singled in Baccari. Williams pushed the lead to 4-1 by singling home Hamilton in the top of the eighth inning.

The Wolverines then sealed the win with a three-run outburst in the ninth. Baccari scored on a passed ball while Hamilton followed with a two-run single that plated Vittone and Kilbane.

Baccari went 2 for 2 with a double and two runs scored. Vittone finished 2 for 4.

Sophomore pitcher Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) earned the win by allowing one earned run in six innings. Guidas (5-3) struck out nine, walked one and allowed four hits. Junior Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) earned his second save of the season by pitching three innings of relief. White allowed one run and two hits in his outing.

Nine of Grove City's final 11 games will be played at home, starting with Wednesday's 4 p.m. game against conference leader W&J.
