Grove City blanks Bethany

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Senior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) struck out 12 men over seven shutout innings while the offense generated 18 hits Friday afternoon as the Grove City College baseball team earned a 13-0 victory over Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Slippery Rock University's Jack Critchfield Park.

Ostrowski took a perfect game into the sixth inning and allowed only two hits in his seven innings. He did not walk a batter while raising his season record to 6-1. Freshman Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) sealed the shutout with two scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City (19-10, 10-6 PAC) grabbed control of the game by scoring eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman center fielder Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) cracked a pair of run-scoring doubles in the inning while freshman second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christian) belted a two-run triple.

Junior catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) also laced a run-scoring double in the inning, which featured 12 Grove City batters. Junior right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), freshman third baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) and senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) all had run-scoring singles in the inning.

The lead swelled to 12-0 in the fourth inning. Saylor scored on a passed ball and Kilbane then came in on a wild pitch. Hamilton scored the third run of the inning on a single by sophomore DH Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian). Williams later scored on a Vittone single.

Junior right fielder Aaron Jenks (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) singled home sophomore pinch hitter Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) in the sixth inning.

Kilbane finished 4 for 5 with two doubles while Vittone finished 3 for 4. Hamilton also went 3 for 4 with three runs scored.

Ostrowski lowered his earned run average to a league-best 1.90. He also leads the league in batting average against (.198), innings pitched (66 1/3) and strikeouts (67).

The Wolverines will visit Bethany for a conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
