PITTSBURGH -- A nine-goal explosion during a 12-minute span in the first quarter Thursday night propelled the Grove City College women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory at Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference at Graham Field. The Wolverines (11-2 overall) remain atop the conference standings with a 5-0 mark while Chatham (6-3 overall) fell to 3-1 in the league.
Senior attack
Brooke Stoltzfus (Elverson, Pa./Conestoga Christian) scored three times in the opening quarter while junior midfielder
Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) and sophomore attack
Madeline Dunda (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) both scored twice. Freshman midfielder
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) closed the first quarter flurry by scoring with 45 seconds left in the period.
Grove City led 9-1 after one quarter and Dunda's goal with 12:02 left in the half helped the Wolverines lead 10-3 at halftime. The lead grew to 14-3 in the third quarter as Nazigian scored twice while freshman attacks
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and
Sarah Pindel (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) also scored.
Nazigian finished with four goals. Senior attack
Grace Dymski (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and sophomore midfielder
Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added goals for the Wolverines.
Dunda and Stoltzfus each recorded two assists. Dymski, Pindel and Roetering all tallied assists.Â
Nazigian led Grove City with 10 draw controls while Wartman had four draw controls. Nazigian, Roetering and Stoltzfus all shared team-high honors with five ground balls. Wartman had four ground balls.Â
Freshman defender
Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) caused three turnovers and Roetering caused two Chatham turnovers. Grove City finished the game with 17 turnovers and Chatham had 16 turnovers.
Freshman goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) stopped five shots to earn her 11th win of the year.
Grove City held a 32-22 edge in shots, including a 23-13 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had 29 ground balls.
The Wolverines will host Thiel at 5 p.m. Wednesday in conference play at Don Lyle Field.Â
