NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon Westminster. Westminster scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener, 2-1. Grove City then fell in the nightcap, 12-3.
Grove City trailed 1-0 entering the sixth inning in Game One but tied the game when freshman center fielder
Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) singled in junior catcher
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield). The Wolverines had the bases loaded with one out but could not break the tie.Â
Two errors in the bottom of the seventh helped Westminster score the winning run.
Senior pitcher
Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four and allowed five hits.
Grove City (12-6, 3-2 PAC) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game Two when sophomore shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) singled in sophomore third baseman
Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) and Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice fly from freshman catcher
Sam DiStefano (Fairview, Pa./Fairview).
Freshman first baseman
Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) led Grove City by going 3 for 4 with a double. Rodriguez doubled and singled. Baccari and Williams both singled twice.
Sophomore pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) started and took the setback for Grove City. He allowed four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Guidas struck out six batters.
Sophomore
Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman
Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) pitched the seventh and Kilbane struck out two men in the eighth inning.
Grove City will host conference foe Waynesburg at 4 p.m. Friday.
