Grove City sweeps Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 5-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Waynesburg University. The Wolverines pulled out a 4-3 win in the opener, then bombed the Jackets in the nightcap, 21-3.

In Game One, freshman first baseman Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh when he singled in freshman second baseman Luke Vittone (Seven Fields, Pa./Eden Christiani) with the game-winning run.

Senior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) then pitched a perfect seventh to record his first collegiate save. He preserved the win for freshman pitcher Evan Umland (Pasadena, Calif./La Canada), who threw the first six innings. Umland struck out four and walked one while permitting six hits.

Vittone doubled, singled and scored a pair of runs in the opener while Kilbane also finished 2 for 3. Sophomore third baseman Markus Williams (Sewickley, Pa./Eden Christian) doubled and singled, as did sophomore shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Freshman center fielder Nico Rodriguez (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) also doubled.

Grove City peppered Waynesburg University pitching for 10 doubles in Game Two as the Wolverines finished with 19 hits. Vittone went 3 for 5 with three doubles while Rodriguez doubled twice as part of a 3-for-4 outing. He scored three times and drove in four runs.

Baccari and senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) both doubled twice and senior DH Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) also cracked a double. He finished 2 for 5.

Senior right fielder Colton Lineman (Apex, N.C./Northwood) went 3 for 6 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Rodriguez and Clary both laced two-run doubles in the first inning to help Grove City grab a 5-0 lead. Baccari's two-run double highlighted the Wolverines' four-run second inning. Hamilton and Rodriguez each doubled in runs in the fourth inning, pushing the lead to 11-2. Williams and junior catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) both walked with the bases loaded, capping that four-run rally.

Freshman third baseman Shane Cato (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) and freshman catcher Aaron Gault (Youngstown, Ohio/Heartland Christian) highlighted Grove City's five-run seventh inning with run-scoring singles. Sophomore infielder Matson Higgins (Lucinda, Pa./North Clarion) added a run-scoring groundout.

Junior pitcher Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) earned the win after pitching six innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Senior Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) pitched a hitless seventh inning. Freshmen Isaiah Zuchowski (Barneveld, N.Y./Poland) and Rafe McIlwain (Plano, Texas/Plano West) pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively.

Grove City (14-6) will host Waynesburg University at 4 p.m. Monday to conclude the three-game series.
