GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team made its Presidents' Athletic Conference debut Thursday night by pulling out a 16-15 victory over visiting Saint Vincent in conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City (7-1, 1-0 PAC) earned its seventh straight overall and its first-ever league win.
Junior midfielder
Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) broke a 15-15 tie with 3:05 left by scoring an unassisted goal. She scored Grove City's last three goals over the final five minutes as the Wolverines erased a 14-13 deficit.
Nazigian fired in a season-high seven goals for the Wolverine while senior attack
Brooke Stoltzfus (Elverson, Pa./Conestoga Christian) pumped in six goals and added two assists for an eight-point night. Grove City also received a pair of goals an assist from sophomore midfielder
Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair). Freshman defender
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added a goal.
Stoltzfus scored three times in the first quarter to help Grove City jump out to a 5-2 lead. Saint Vincent (4-4, 0-1 PAC) trimmed the lead to 5-3 by the end of the quarter and scored the first four goals of the second quarter. Grove City reclaimed a 9-7 halftime lead, however, by scoring the final four goals of the half. Stoltzfus scored twice while Nazigian and Wartman added goals.Â
Grove City led 13-12 after 45 minutes but Saint Vincent reclaimed the lead on goals by Joey Smith and Rachel Thatcher.
Sophomore attack
Madeline Dunda (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) recorded a pair of assists for the Wolverines and senior attack
Grace Dymski (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) added an assist.
Nazigian recorded a team-leading nine draw controls. Freshman midfielder
Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) picked up 11 ground balls while freshman defender
Sarah Jackson (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) had seven ground balls. Dunda, freshman attack
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) and freshman defender
Mackeyla Viana (Lexington, Mass./Lexington Christian) all totaled four ground balls.
Jackson caused a season-high nine turnovers and Arnold caused four turnovers. Saint Vincent had 37 turnovers while Grove City turned over possession 27 times.Â
Each team had 31 shots in the game. Freshman goalie
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) made 10 saves to earn the win.
Grove City will visit Allegheny at 4:30 p.m. Monday in non-conference play.
