GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's lacrosse team made its varsity debut Wednesday night by hosting Marietta in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field. Grove City rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game three times. However, Marietta's Leeza Jongekryg scored the game-winning goal with 12 seconds left in regulation to give the Pioneers a 12-11 victory.
Senior attack
Brooke Stoltzfus (Elverson, Pa./Conestoga Christian) fired in four goals for Grove City while sophomore midfielder
Lucy Martin (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and junior midfielder
Madison Nazigian (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) each pumped in three goals.Â
Freshman attack
Abby Roetering (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) opened the scoring for Grove City as she recorded the program's first goal with 6:49 left in the second quarter. Stoltzfus cut the lead to 6-2 with an unassisted goal 50 seconds later. Nazigian scored off a Stoltzfus assist with 40 seconds left in the half, cutting the deficit to 6-3 by halftime.
Martin scored twice in the third quarter to help Grove City trim the lead to 7-6. Marietta (1-0) led 9-7 after three quarters but the Wolverines forged a 9-9 tie five minutes into the fourth quarter. Martin scored off a Roetering assist at 11:37 while Martin tied the game with an unassisted goal at 9:42. Nazigian later tied the game at 11 with 58 seconds left after receiving an assist from Martin.
Stoltzfus recorded a team-leading eight ground balls while Nazigian had five ground balls. Freshman midfielder
Emily Arnold (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) recorded four ground balls and freshman midfielder
Amber Wartman (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) picked up three ground balls. Stoltzfus also caused three turnovers and Nazigian caused a pair of turnovers.
In goal, freshman
Elyse Kiggins (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) stopped nine shots. Marietta outshot Grove City, 32-24, and also held a 21-17 edge in shots on goal. Grove City had 26 turnovers and Marietta turned over possession 22 times.
Grove City will host Division II Ursuline next Wednesday at 6 p.m. in non-conference action at Robert E. Thorn Field.
