WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team closed the 2021-22 regular season Saturday afternoon with a 69-61 setback at Washington & Jefferson (20-4, 17-1 PAC) in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Salvitti Family Gymnasium.
Grove City (16-8, 13-5 PAC) trailed 26-11 early in the second quarter but trimmed the lead to 38-34 by halftime. The Wolverines forged a 40-40 tie three minutes into the third quarter as junior center
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and senior forward
Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) scored consecutive field goals.
Junior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) then gave Grove City its first lead of the second half when she buried a three-pointer. A Podkul jumper with 3:38 left in the third quarter gave the Wolverines their final lead, 49-48. W&J closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run, however.
Grove City trimmed W&J's lead to 56-53 when freshman forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) hit consecutive jumpers but W&J held off the Wolverines over the final six minutes.
Kallock led Grove City with 19 points and Podkul posted 13 points. Cano added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.Â
Grove City shot 24 of 63 (38 percent) from the field while W&J finished 22 of 48 (46 percent). Grove City held a 35-32 edge in total rebounds. Freshman guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) added six rebounds for the Wolverines.
Podkul and Polczynski both had four assists for the Wolverines. Each player also had three steals. Grove City turned over the ball 19 times and W&J committed 20 turnovers.Â
Piper Morningstar led W&J with 19 points.
Grove City will be the No. 3 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines will host the No. 6 seed, either Geneva or Saint Vincent, in a conference tournament quarterfinal Tuesday evening.
