Grove City storms past Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) fired in 26 points and freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) added a career-best 12 points Wednesday night to help lead the Grove City College women's basketball team to an 87-50 home win over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Westminster (15-8, 12-5 PAC) at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (16-7, 13-4 PAC) turned 26 Westminster points into 29 turnovers. The Wolverines shot 33 of 62 (53 percent) from the field for the game, including a 16-of-29 (55 percent) effort in the first half.

Grove City broke open the game with a 19-2 run that started late in the first quarter. Freshman guard Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity) sparked the run by draining a three-pointer with 49 seconds left in the first quarter. Kallock then hit two free throws to give Grove City a 20-13 lead after one period.

Kallock opened the second quarter with a three-pointer while two free throws and a layup from freshman center Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) gave Grove City a 27-15 lead. Kallock's fast-break layup, a steal and score by Polczynski and a Polczynski three-pointer gave Grove City a 34-15 lead with five minutes left in the first half.

Westminster pulled to within 37-25 but Grove City scored the final seven points of the half. Durig drilled another three-pointer, freshman guard Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) scored in transition and Ingram sank two free throws.

A jumper by freshman forward Hayley Fenchel (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and a three-pointer from freshman guard Nevaeh Ewing (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) gave Grove City a 72-42 lead at the end of the third quarter. Grove City led by as many as 39 points in the fourth period.

Ewing finished with seven points. Senior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) finished with eight points and a game-high seven rebounds. Podkul helped Grove City earn a 34-32 edge on the glass.

Polczynski dished out six assists, Hertzler had four assists and Podkul assisted three field goals. Podkul also had seven steals and a pair of blocked shots. Polczynski recorded four steals. Grove City finished with 13 turnovers.

Westminster finished the game 21 of 54 (39 percent) from the field. Natalie Murrio and Caitlyn Condoleon each had eight points for the visitors.

Grove City closes the regular season Saturday at Washington & Jefferson. Tip-off will be 1 p.m. A win will give Grove City the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament. The Wolverines are assured of hosting a tournament quarterfinal next Tuesday evening.
