GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team used a 22-4 run over the third and fourth quarters Saturday afternoon in pulling away to an 86-51 Senior Day victory over visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action the Grove City College Arena.
Senior
Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield), the team's lone senior, posted a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double to help lead the Wolverines (15-7, 12-4 PAC). Podkul also recorded five assists and five steals in her 28 minutes of action.
Junior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) led Grove City with 14 points and freshman guard
Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) added 11 points.
Grove City led 41-25 at halftime but Thiel (4-14, 2-10) closed to within 50-38 with 3:18 left in the third quarter. The Wolverines then scored the final nine points of the quarter, starting their 22-4 run.
Kallock scored after a Podkul steal and Podkul followed with a jumper. Freshman guard
Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity) pushed the lead to 56-38 with two free throws. Following another Durig foul shot, freshman forward
Hayley Fenchel (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) closed the quarter by hitting a jumper in the lane.
Grove City scored the first six points of the fourth quarter as Fenchel sank two free throws, junior center
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) poured in a layup and freshman guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) scored on a fast break.
Freshman guard
Nevaeh Ewing (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) capped the 22-4 run with a three-pointer, giving Grove City a 72-42 lead with seven minutes left.
Grove City held Thiel without a field goal over the final 6:41 of the first quarter as the Wolverines bolted to a 24-6 lead. Freshman forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) scored a putback with one second left in the quarter, punctuating an 18-2 outburst.
Grove City shot 37 of 87 (43 percent) from the field for the game while Thiel hit 20 of 60 (33.3 percent) field goal attempts. Hannon added seven rebounds and freshman center
Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) had five boards as Grove City owned a 51-45 advantage on the glass.
Polczynski and freshman guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) both had five assist for the Wolverines. Durig and Polczynski had three steals each. Ingram blocked two shots.
Grove City had a season-low seven turnovers. Thiel turned over the ball 26 times. Durig, Hannon and Ingram all finished with eight points.
Destiny Johnson led Thiel with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Grove City will host archrival Westminster at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in conference play. That will be Grove City's home finale for the regular season. The Wolverines will host at least one game in the season-ending Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
