Late run lifts Grove City past Bethany

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team outscored visiting Bethany 10-0 over the final 2:34 Saturday afternoon to earn a 78-74 victory in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. 

Winners of four straight, Grove City trailed 74-68 with 2:34 remaining before charging ahead. Senior forward Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) sparked the run with a three-point play. Following a steal by freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin), freshman forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) buried two free throws with 1:59 left. 

Grove City then surged ahead with 37 seconds left when Podkul scored in transition after Polczynski's outlet pass. Polczynski pushed the lead to 77-74 by hitting two free throws after a 10-second violation. Senior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) then sealed the win by splitting two foul shots.

Four Grove City players scored in double figures, led by Hannon's career-high 17 points. Podkul finished with 15 points while Kallock pumped in 13 points, all in the second half. Freshman guard Jaden Davinsizer (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) bombed in four three-pointers as part of a 12-point outing.

Grove City trailed 50-49 with one minute left in the third quarter but junior center Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) hit two free throws and Hannon scored in the paint to give Grove City a 53-51 lead after 30 minutes. The Wolverines then pushed the lead to 59-51 in the first minute of the fourth quarter as Kallock drilled a three-pointer between a Podkul layup and Podkul foul shot.

Bethany then outscored the Wolverines, 23-9, over the next seven minutes to take its 74-68 lead. 

Bethany (10-6, 5-4 PAC) jumped out to an 18-8 lead and led 20-14 after one quarter. Grove City reclaimed the lead three minutes into the second period on consecutive field goals by freshman guard Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

Davinsizer's back-to-back three-pointers then gave Grove City a 31-23 advantage. Bethany battled back to tie the game at 35 by halftime.

Cano finished with nine points and Polczynski added eight points. Polczynski had a team-high eight rebounds. Podkul collected seven rebounds and Cano had six boards. Bethany outrebounded Grove City, 40-33.

Grove City shot 27 of 61 (44 percent) from the field for the game. Bethany finished 23 of 51 (45 percent). The Bison opened the fourth quarter by making 8 of 10 field goal attempts before missing five of their final six shots. 

Grove City had 13 turnovers while Bethany turned over the ball 20 times. The Wolverines converted the 20 turnovers into 29 points.

Freshman Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) recorded four assists for Grove City (11-6, 8-3 PAC). Podkul and Polczynski each had three assists. Podkul also blocked three shots. Kallock and Polczynski each had three steals. 

Makenzee Mason led Bethany with 25 points. The game featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes. Bethany defeated Grove City in the teams' first meeting, 73-70, December 4 at Bethany.

Grove City will open a three-game road swing Monday night at Thiel. Tip-off will be 5:30 p.m. in Greenville.
