Grove City tops Geneva, 83-64

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team opened a three-game homestand Monday night by earning an 83-64 victory over visiting Geneva in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Grove City College Arena. Grove City (9-6, 6-3 PAC) charged out to an 11-2 lead and never trailed in the victory.

Three Grove City players scored in double figures, led by a 19-point outing from junior guard Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem). Freshman forward Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) tossed in 11 points and freshman guard Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) recorded 10 points. 

Grove City led 18-7 after one quarter but Geneva (6-8, 5-4 PAC) whittled the lead to 18-13 with six minutes left in the half. The Wolverines then closed the first half on a 19-6 run, however, and led 37-19 at halftime.

Hannon hit a three-pointer and then scored on a fast break to spark the run. Freshman guard Ashley Durig (Washington, Pa./Trinity) pushed the lead to 25-13 with a steal and subsequent layup.

A Podkul putback, a layup by freshman forward Blaise Kilmartin (Altoona, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and two free throws from junior center Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) extended the lead to 31-15. Kallock followed with consecutive field goals and Polczynski's putback capped the run. 

Grove City led by as many as 30 points in the third quarter and held a 63-35 lead after 30 minutes.

Grove City shot 34 of 91 (37 percent) from the field for the game while Geneva finished 24 of 81 (30 percent).

Grove City outrebounded Geneva, 64-53. Freshman center Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds while Podkul had nine rebounds. Cano collected seven rebounds and Polczynski picked off six rebounds.

Polczynski also had five assists. Kallock and freshman guard Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) both dished out three assists. Hannon recorded four steals and Hertzler had three steals. Grove City forced 24 Geneva turnovers. The Wolverines turned over the ball 19 times. 

Mia San Nicolas led Geneva with 14 points.

Grove City will host Franciscan at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in conference action.
