GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's basketball team dropped a 75-53 decision to visiting Washington & Jefferson in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Grove City College Arena. Conference-leading W&J (9-3, 6-0 PAC) outscored Grove City (6-5, 3-2 PAC) 31-11 over the final 11 minutes of the game.
Senior forward
Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) paced Grove City with her second consecutive double-double as she posted 13 points and 15 rebounds. Junior center
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) added nine points and freshman guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) tossed in eight points.Â
Grove City trailed 36-32 at halftime but tied the game in the first minute of the third quarter as Cano scored in the paint and junior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) scored after a steal. W&J reclaimed a four-point lead, 40-36, but Kallock's two free throws and a Podkul jumper tied the game at 40 with four minutes left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Grove City shot 4 of 15 (27 percent) from the field while W&J hit 7 of 11 (64 percent) attempts from the field. For the game, Grove City went 21 of 69 (30 percent) from the field. W&J finished 24 of 51 (47 percent).
Cano added five rebounds for Grove City to help the Wolverines accumulate a 42-40 edge on the glass. Polczynski had four assists while Kallock recorded three steals. Grove City had 15 turnovers and W&J turned over the ball 17 times. Each team had only three turnovers in the first half.
Meghan Dryburgh led W&J with 23 points. W&J led 18-15 after the first quarter.
Grove City will host Saint Vincent at 5:30 p.m. Monday in conference play. Saturday's game starts a stretch in which the Wolverines will play seven games in 14 days.
