PITTSBURGH -- Senior forward
Allison Podkul (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tied a pair of career highs by recording 19 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday night as she helped lead the Grove City College women's basketball team to a 59-40 victory at Chatham in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Chatham Center.
Junior guard
Megan Kallock (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) added 13 points for the Wolverines (6-4, 3-1 PAC), who returned to action after a 26-day layoff.
Podkul and Kallock each scored 10 points in the first half to help Grove City take a 23-13 halftime lead. Chatham (8-3, 2-2 PAC) whittled the lead to 26-23 with six minutes left in the third quarter but Grove City broke open the game with a 13-3 run.
Freshman forward
Clara Hannon (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) sparked the run with a three-pointer. Freshman guard
Haley Hertzler (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and junior center
Nina Cano (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) followed with jumpers, pushing Grove City's lead to 33-24. Podkul scored consecutive field goals and Cano capped the quarter with a layup to give Grove City a 39-26 lead.
Grove City led by as many as 20 points, 57-37, in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines held a 15-7 edge after 10 minutes.
Grove City outrebounded Chatham, 47-44. In addition to Podkul's 13 boards, freshman center
Kiley Ingram (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) collected six rebounds. Cano and Hannon each had five rebounds.
Grove City shot 25 of 62 (40 percent) from the field while holding Chatham to 26 percent (16 of 62) shooting. The Wolverines held Chatham to a 2-for-21 effort from behind the three-point line.
Kallock tallied three assists. Hertzler recorded four steals while Podkul, sophomore forward
Katie Baller (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian) and freshman guard
Mara Polczynski (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) all had three steals. Each team had 29 turnovers.
Podkul's first career 19-point effort came February 5, 2020, also at Chatham.
Julianna Skowron led Chatham with 16 points.
Grove City will host conference rival Washington & Jefferson (8-3, 5-0 PAC) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Grove City College Arena.
