NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College football team dropped a 33-32 road decision Saturday afternoon to Westminster in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Memorial Field. The second half featured five lead changes.
The final lead change came with 1:14 left in the game when Westminster's Denny Dennison caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Cole Konieczka, giving the Titans a 33-32 lead. Grove City turned over the ball on an interception on the first play of the next series and Westminster closed out the game.
Grove City trailed 21-20 late in the third quarter but surged ahead, 26-21, when junior running back
Clayton Parrish (Mercer, Pa./West Middlesex) scored on a three-yard touchdown run.
Westminster took a 27-26 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter as tight end Chevy Dawson caught a 20-yard touchdown pass. Grove City still trailed 27-26 with 4:54 left and took possession on its own 3 after a Westminster punt.
The Wolverines moved toward midfield as senior quarterback
Josh Ehst (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) fired a 31-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver
Ryan Heckathorn (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk). Four plays later, Ehst threw a four-yard completion to senior wide receiver
Cody Gustafson (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg) on fourth-and-3.
Ehst then threw a go-ahead 43-yard touchdown pass to Gustafson on the next play, putting Grove City ahead 32-27. The two-point conversion failed.Â
Ehst went 22 of 36 for 262 yards and three touchdowns. Gustafson caught 13 passes for 132 yards. Heckathorn netted 73 yards on his three catches and sophomore wide receiver
Scott Fraser (Butler, Pa./Knoch) added six catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Grove City took a 7-0 lead at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter when senior linebacker
Parker Kilgore (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) intercepted Konieczka at the Westminster 27 and returned the pick for a touchdown.
The lead grew to 14-0 with 1:41 left in the opening quarter when Fraser caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ehst. Gustafson added a nine-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter as Grove City led 20-7 at halftime.
Freshman running back
Nico Flati (Aliquippa, Pa./West Allegheny) led Grove City with 67 rushing yards on 22 carries. Parrish added 35 yards.Â
Senior safety
Patrick Mark (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Wellington) intercepted a pass in the closing moments of the first half for Grove City. Kilgore led the defense with 13 total tackles while Mark and sophomore cornerback
Gabe Dunlap (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) both had seven tackles.Â
Konieczka finished 20 of 33 for 267 yards. Ryan Gomes led the Titans with 87 rushing yards. Tylon Eilam had eight catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Each team had 23 first downs. Westminster (2-1, 2-0) outgained Grove City, 428-385. Grove City (3-1, 2-1) went 9 of 15 on third down and held a 34:06-25:54 edge in time of possession.
Grove City and Westminster have split the last four meetings. Those four games have been decided by 13 total points.
The Wolverines will visit Waynesburg next Saturday at 1 p.m. in conference action.
