Grove City captures PAC title

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's tennis team captured its first Presidents' Athletic Conference title since 2015 by earning a 5-0 win Saturday afternoon over Franciscan in the championship match of the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, hosted by Washington & Jefferson College. 

The conference title gives Grove City (8-2) an automatic berth in this spring's NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The tournament pairings will be announced later next week. 

Grove City took command of the match by sweeping the three doubles bouts. Junior Karsten Lagerquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) teamed with freshman Jack Booker (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) for an 8-1 victory at first doubles. Sophomore Ryne Talko (Cresson, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) and freshman Jameson Sposato (Frewsburg, N.Y./Frewsburg) combined to pick up an 8-5 triumph at second doubles.

At third doubles, freshmen Collier Kaufman (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) and Michael Odrey (New Kensington, Pa./Valley) picked up an 8-2 win.

Lagerquist and Odrey both dropped only two games in singles play, securing the team victory with their respective wins. Lagerquist won 6-1, 6-1 at second singles while Odrey nailed down a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles.

All-time, Grove City now has 27 Presidents' Athletic Conference titles.
