PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Chatham, highlighting the afternoon with a come-from-behind 8-7 win in the nightcap at West Field. Chatham won the opener, 5-1.
Grove City (23-8, 19-5 PAC) trailed 7-5 entering the ninth inning of Game Two. Sophomore center fielder
Kaz Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) sparked the rally with a leadoff single. Sophomore right fielder
Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) then reached on a one-out infield single. Sophomore third baseman
C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) then doubled in Hoffman, cutting the lead to 7-6.
With two outs, senior second baseman
Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) roped a go-ahead single that scored Tambellini and Hamilton.Â
Winning pitcher
Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) then retired Chatham in the bottom of the ninth, securing the victory.
Grove City trailed 4-0 in the fourth inning before cutting the lead in half. Abbott singled in Saylor and freshman shortstop
Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) followed by driving in senior first baseman
Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) with a single.
Hamilton's two-run double tied the game in the fourth. Grove City then took its first lead as senior catcher
Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) drove in Hamilton with a single.
Hamilton finished 3 for 5 while Abbott and Orner both went 2 for 5. Saylor doubled and also scored three runs.Â
Basham, a sophomore reliever, earned the victory by pitching 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and allowed three earned runs. Sophomore
Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) started and gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings.
Chatham led 3-0 after two innings in the opener. Grove City broke through in the third as Hoffman walked and scored on a double by senior left fielder
Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).Â
Junior third baseman
Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) went 2 for 3. Chatham held Grove City to six hits in the first game.
Freshman pitcher
Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) made his first start of the season and threw a complete game. He struck out seven men in six innings while yielding three earned runs.Â
Grove City will visit Geneva for a conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
