Grove City surge continues

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 25-8 overall and 21-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a Thursday doubleheader at conference foe Geneva. Grove City won the opener, 3-1, then picked up an 11-5 triumph in Game Two at 33rd Street Field.

Grove City has now won 20 of its last 23 games.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) earned his conference-leading eighth win in the opener as he tossed a five-hitter. Ostrowski (8-1) struck out seven men and did not walk a batter in his seven innings.

Senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) led off the opener with his fourth home run of the season. In the sixth, senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and senior DH Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) laced consecutive run-scoring singles that boosted Grove City's lead to 3-0.

Abbott went 2 for 3 while Clary finished 2 for 4. Abbott and sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) both scored.

Abbott also helped pace Grove City in the nightcap by collecting three hits and knocking in four runs. Freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) went 3 for 5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Meanwhile, freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) tripled as part of a 3-for-5 effort.

Baccari, Flaming, Saylor and sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) all scored twice. Sophomore center fielder Aaron Jenks (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Grove City exploded for nine runs in the top of the third inning by combining seven hits with three Geneva errors. Jenks's groundout drove in Flaming, tying the game 1-1. Baccari stole home on the front of a double steal to put Grove City ahead to stay. Clary's bunt single scored Jenks.

Later in the inning, Abbott cracked a two-run single and then scored on a Flaming double. Baccari tripled in Flaming and Jenks's double brought home Baccari.

Abbott's two-run single in the eighth inning scored Saylor and Tambellini.

Freshman pitcher Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) earned the win by pitching seven innings. He struck out eight while allowing three earned runs. Junior Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic) pitched a scoreless eighth in relief. Junior Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) blanked Geneva in the ninth inning.

Grove City's 21 league wins are the most in program history. Grove City also secured its third 25-win season in the last five seasons and the fifth 25-win season in program history.

The Wolverines will host Geneva for a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday at Jack Behringer Field. That will close the regular season. Grove City will be the No. 2 seed in next week's four-team conference tournament.
