Wolverines split with Thiel

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference action Monday afternoon at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City won the opener, 10-8, in a game that counts towards the conference standings. Thiel pulled out a 7-6 win in Game Two, which the conference classifies as a non-conference game.

Grove City (10-6, 8-4 PAC) scored eight runs over its final three at-bats in the opener as the Wolverines erased Thiel's 3-2 lead.

Grove City forged a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth when senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored on a groundout by sophomore pinch hitter Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong). Senior catcher Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) then scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

The Wolverines then added four runs in the seventh inning. Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) doubled in sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour), giving Grove City a 5-3 lead. Sophomore C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored the Wolverines' sixth run on a double play that also moved Hamilton to third.

Hamilton later scored on an error. Freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) reached on the error and then came home when freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) laced a double to right center.

Grove City extended its lead to 10-3 with a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Saylor singled in senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) and Abbott drove home Tambellini.

Tambellini went 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Abbott doubled, singled and walked three times. Baccari finished 2 for 5 while Clary scored twice.

Sophomore pitcher Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) earned the victory after pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out three and allowed three earned runs. Junior Noah Sedmak (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) recorded the final two outs of the game to notch his first collegiate save.

Sophomore Calvin Burns (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) started and yielded two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked two.

Grove City trailed 2-0 in Game Two -- a seven-inning game -- but posted four runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to three consecutive doubles. Hamilton tied the game by doubling in Saylor and Tambellini. Abbott doubled home Hamilton and Orner followed with a run-scoring double that plated Abbott.

Thiel reclaimed a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning but the Wolverines forged a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the inning as junior third baseman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) singled in Baccari.

However, Thiel scored twice in the top of the seventh. Grove City cut the lead to 7-6 when Orner singled in Saylor. The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out but did not again score.

Orner finished 3 for 4 while Lew went 2 for 3 in his first start of the season.

Senior pitcher D.J. Newby (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) started for Grove City. Newby allowed three hits and four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Junior Robby Randolph (Cranberry Township, Pa./North Catholic), senior Jacob Brothers (Aurora, Ill./Aurora Christian) and freshman Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) all pitched in relief, with Brothers taking the setback.

Grove City will visit Franciscan for a conference doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. in Steubenville, Ohio.
