Grove City earns road sweep

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team surged into second place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by pulling out a pair of one-run games Tuesday afternoon at Franciscan. The Wolverines earned a 6-5 win in Game One and then grabbed an 11-10 victory in the nightcap at Vaccaro Field. The wins raise Grove City's conference record to 10-4.

Grove City trailed 2-0 after five innings in Game One before exploding for six runs in the top of the sixth. Senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) sparked the comeback with a solo homer.

Sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) reached on an error and then advanced to third when senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) doubled. Senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) then gave Grove City the lead when he roped a two-run single.

Abbott scored the fourth run of the inning when freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) doubled. Junior third baseman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) punctuated the inning with a two-run homer to left, his first collegiate round-tripper.

Lew also doubled while Clary finished 2 for 4.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) earned his fourth win of the season by pitching six innings. He allowed four earned runs and struck out five men. Ostrowski (4-1) shares the conference lead in wins. Sophomore Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) recorded the final two outs of the game, earning his second save. Freshman reliever Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) allowed one run in relief in the bottom of the seventh.

Grove City led 11-5 in the seventh inning of Game Two -- a nine-inning game -- before holding off Franciscan's late rally. Franciscan scored three times in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run in scoring position. But Guidas retired Franciscan's final two batters to secure the save.

Senior catcher Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) paced Grove City's 13-hit attack by going 5 for 6 with a double and three runs batted in. The five hits are a career high for Orner. It marks the first five-hit game for a Grove City player since April 13, 2019, when Micah Burke had five hits against Chatham.

Hamilton and freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) also doubled for the Wolverines. Abbott, Flaming and sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) all had two hits. Saylor walked four times and scored three runs.

Grove City grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Abbott and Clary both scored on wild pitches. Abbott also singled in Saylor. Two Franciscan errors helped spark Grove City's four-run fourth inning, which also featured Orner's run-scoring double.

Flaming singled home Hamilton in the sixth. Abbott singled in Tambellini to give Grove City a 9-5 lead in the seventh. Orner followed with a two-run single.

Senior pitcher Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) earned the win after allowing five earned runs in five innings. Sophomore Elijah White (Zelienople, Pa./Portersville Christian) followed with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Basham and freshman Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) both pitched in relief before Guidas closed out the win.

Grove City (12-6 overall) will visit Westminster for a conference doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
