Saylor cycle sparks sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 22-7 overall by sweeping a home doubleheader Friday afternoon with Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham at Jack Behringer Field. Grove City won the opener, 7-3, then earned an 11-2 non-conference victory in Game Two.

Sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) hit for the cycle in Game One to help lead the Wolverines' 13-hit attack. Saylor tripled in the first inning, cracked a run-scoring double in the third and then hit an infield single in the fifth. Following a walk in the seventh inning, Saylor completed his cycle by belting a two-run home run to left field in Grove City's three-run eighth inning.

Saylor is the first Grove City player to hit for the cycle since March 15, 2019, when current junior outfielder Colton Lineman (Pittsboro, N.C./Northwood) accomplished the feat in Butler, Pa., against Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) doubled twice as part of a 3-for-5 effort. Junior third baseman Matt Lew (Redmond, Wash./Bellevue Christian) doubled and singled while senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) went 2 for 4.

Lew's two-run double in the second inning drove in freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and senior DH Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley). In the third inning, Saylor doubled home Tambellini, giving Grove City (18-4 PAC) a 3-1 lead.

Abbott singled in Saylor to push the lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Chatham cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth inning on Luke Paulson's wind-aided two-run homer. However, Tambellini's infield single drove home Lew in the bottom of the inning. Saylor's home run closed the scoring.

Junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) earned his conference-leading seventh win after pitching eight innings. He matched a season high with 12 strikeouts and allowed six hits. Freshman reliever Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) struck out the side in the ninth inning.

Abbott and Orner both went 3 for 3 with doubles in Game Two. Sophomore center fielder Kaz Hoffman (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) also doubled for the Wolverines while Baccari and senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian) both scored twice.

Orner doubled in Abbott to give Grove City a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Five Chatham errors in the third inning led to four Grove City runs. Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) drove in Saylor with a sacrifice fly.

Freshman DH Isaak Flaming (Dresden, Maine/Morse) sparked Grove City's five-run fifth inning by driving in Abbott with a sacrifice fly. Hoffman doubled in Orner while Tambellini then singled home Hoffman and Baccari. Clary capped the inning by stealing home on the front end of a double steal.

Freshman pinch hitter Caleb Vinoverski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Cornerstone Prep) drove in sophomore Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) with a sixth-inning fielder's choice.

Freshman pitcher Nate Hamel (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) earned his first victory by throwing a complete game. Hamel, who made his first collegiate start Friday, allowed two runs and nine hits in seven innings. He struck out five men.

Grove City will visit Chatham for a conference doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m.
