Grove City sweeps Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 7-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Thiel. Grove City earned a 6-2 win in Game One at Tomcat Park, then rallied for a 9-6 victory in the second game.

In the opener, junior pitcher Tate Ostrowski (Essex, Mass./Covenant Christian) allowed one earned run and five hits over seven innings as he earned a complete game victory. The Wolverines then rapped 13 hits in Game Two as five men had multiple-hit performances.

Grove City (9-5 overall) trailed 1-0 in Game One but tied the game in the fourth inning when sophomore catcher C.J. Saylor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) scored on a passed ball. Grove City then grabbed a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Sophomore right fielder Anthony Tambellini (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) singled in sophomore third baseman Noah Cyphert (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) with the go-ahead run. Grove City then pushed the lead to 4-1 when senior second baseman Bobby Abbott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) roped a two-run single that brought in Tambellini and senior left fielder Jesse Clary (Cranberry Township, Pa./Eden Christian).

The Wolverines sealed the win with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Senior first baseman Bubba Hamilton (Garner, N.C./Waynesboro, Pa.) singled in Saylor and then crossed home on Abbott's double to right field.

Saylor also doubled for the Wolverines, who had seven hits in the opener.

Ostrowski (3-1) struck out six and walked two in seven innings. He now has 31 strikeouts and 17 hits allowed in 27 2/3 innings this year.

Abbott went 3 for 5 with a double and three runs batted in to help pace Grove City in the nightcap. Hamilton went 2 for 3 while Clary, Saylor and Tambellini also had two hits each. Clary, Saylor and senior catcher Tanner Orner (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) all doubled and Saylor scored three times.

Grove City trailed 5-3 after three innings but the Wolverines forged a tie as Clary doubled in freshman shortstop Lucca Baccari (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) and then scored on Tambellini's single.

Grove City then broke the tie in the seventh as Hamilton doubled home Saylor. Orner's sacrifice fly scored Hamilton to put Grove City ahead 7-5. Abbott's two-run single in the ninth helped seal the win.

Freshman reliever Nick Guidas (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine Richland) earned the win after pitching 3 2/3 innings of relief. He struck out six, walked one and allowed one run. Sophomore Austin Basham (Mansfield, Ohio/Lexington) pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Senior Lake Pry (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) started and pitched three innings. He allowed four earned runs and struck out two.

The wins raised Grove City's road record to 6-2 this season.

Grove City will look to sweep the season series with Thiel when the teams meet Monday afternoon at Jack Behringer Field in Grove City. Game One will start at 1 p.m. That game will count in the conference standings while the second game of Monday's twinbill will be considered a non-conference game.
